As the first professional women’s league in Europe, the Bundesliga wants to continue its season interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic from May 29th. As the German Football Association announced on Wednesday after a management conference of the twelve first division teams, a winner should also be determined in the DFB Cup.
“The return of the women’s Bundesliga to the pitch is another important step towards a kind of normality in football and in society,” said DFB President Fritz Keller. The Bundesliga is playing a pioneering role in international women’s football.

“The continuation of the season is a strong signal for women’s football and the equal treatment of professional athletes,” said DFB Vice President Hannelore Ratzeburg in the message. Siggi Dietrich, the chairman of the DFB committee for the women’s federal leagues and manager of the 1st FFC Frankfurt, even called the restart a historic moment. He pointed out that “as the first European professional league for women with the greatest possible safety factors for players and the team around whom the team can get back into the game”.
