The Infonavit Information System shows that working women take up to 10 years longer than men to obtain a home loan, but they also have 5% less money in their savings accounts for this purpose.
From 2010 to 2022, 16.5 million housing actions were carried out in the country, of which 32% were directed at women, according to the National Housing Commission (Conavi).
There is a growing inequality between men and women, highlighting the existing one in the credit market for access to housing, comments Lilia Aguilar, deputy of the Labor Party (PT) and president of the Housing Commission of the Chamber of Deputies.
In an interview with this newspaper, he says that there is currently a gender gap in the issue of housing allocation that is granted in the Infonavit quota system, since only 30% remain with women.
Taking the above into account, the Housing Commission of the Chamber of Deputies approved an initiative signed by the Morenista deputy Laura Imelda Pérez.
The purpose of the initiative is first, the inclusion or preference of women so that they give them credits that have lower rates, longer payment periods and smaller monthly payments.
“The modifications to the Infonavit law establish the institute’s duty to incorporate the gender perspective and force it to create a special program for women where preference is given to the granting of housing loans,” says Lilia Aguilar.
He affirms that it is being managed with Infonavit so that the proposal can come out in its agreements on March 8 on International Women’s Day, in such a way that public policy comes out before the modifications to the law.
Lilia Aguilar explains that the initiative must go through the plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies and from there to the Senate to later be published. She estimates that this process can take at least six months.
