Two women suffered attempted sexual abuse and were also beaten during a robbery, on their way home, after enjoying the Salvador Carnival at Circuito Osmar (Campo Grande). They were with a teenager when they were surprised by a man in the Garcia neighborhood.
According to sources linked to the Carnival committee, the women, one aged 47 and the other aged 49, and the teenager, the daughter of one of them, were returning home, around 5am on the 10th (Saturday), when approached. Still according to the sources, the criminal fled with the victims’ belongings, who were initially taken to a Municipal Health Department (SMS) service point in the circuit.
CORREIO requested a position from the SMS, but so far has not received a response. The Secretariat for Policies for Women, Children and Youth (SPMJ) said that so far it has only provided psychosocial care to a victim of rape, which occurred on the 9th, in Barra, and that data on sexual violence is provided by the Civil Police, body responsible for recording occurrences.
Regarding the attempted sexual abuse and beating, the Civil Police said that “two women victims of bodily injuries that occurred on Saturday, in the Garcia neighborhood, were admitted to the Police Station of the State General Hospital”. Also according to the note, “the motivation for the aggression is being investigated by the 1st Barris Territorial Police Station”.
Sexual abuse and rape are different terms, but they both refer to sexual crimes. Sexual abuse is unwanted molestation or discomfort that someone may inflict on another person’s body with the aim of obtaining sexual advantages. Rape is a more serious crime. It involves forced sexual intercourse without consent.
This Tuesday morning (13), there were rumors of two other cases of rape during the party in Salvador. However, the PC reported that “since the first day of Carnival, two cases of rape have been registered and are being investigated by the Special Police Station for Women’s Assistance (Deam) of the Casa da Mulher Brasileira”.
The state Public Ministry (MP/BA) reported that it is monitoring “the progress of police investigations into the two cases of rape registered at the Special Police Stations for Women’s Assistance (Deam) during Salvador’s Carnival”. “The MP is part of the Integrated Command and Control Center of the Public Security Secretariat and is in direct contact with the police authorities responsible for the investigation. The investigations are carried out in secrecy”, says the note
The most recent case happened this Sunday (11) when a woman was raped by three men on Baependi Street, in the Ondina neighborhood. On the 9th, Friday, a resident of Imbuí was raped by seven men. The crime happened shortly after 1:30 am, when the victim was in the vicinity of the old Salvador Praia Hotel.
