Women, Sexuality and Maternity Program Invites reflection on the importance of preventing breast cancer and performing mammograms

The Women, Sexuality and Maternity Program, an initiative of the National Service for Women and Gender Equity run by the Municipality of Alto Hospicio, invites us to reflect on the importance of preventing breast cancer and conducting breast self-examination and mammography, in within the framework of the commemoration of the World Day (October 19) for the Prevention of Breast Cancer.

The call for mammograms is because this pathology is the leading cause of cancer death among women. In Chile, a woman is diagnosed with this disease every 3 hours.

According to information from the Ministry of Health, in the world one in eight women develops this disease and in the country more than 5,000 women are diagnosed with this pathology.

In Alto Hospicio, the situation does not differ from other parts of the country and younger women are increasingly being affected by some type of breast pathology, unlike previous years in which the altered exams were always over 50 years of age. Now there are 35 or 40-year-old users with examinations with images that reveal active cancer, said Franchesca Mella, a technical reference for the Women’s Health Program.

In this sense, to detect breast cancer early and early, the professional reiterated the invitation to women over 35 years of age to undergo, if it is not a physical breast examination, at least one complementary examination to detect that pathology.

“We carry out this analysis on a daily basis in Iquique by an agreement that we have, and if any alteration of the breasts is detected through this test, the pertinent referral is made to the regional hospital,” he said. It should be noted that the prevention of breast cancer It is carried out in all the health centers of the commune, where users registered in the Municipal Health records can request care with a midwife so that they can deliver the order of mammography or breast echo, as appropriate.
