“The women were taken to Belarus and then to a pre-trial detention center in Bryansk (Russian Federation), where they were tortured and threatened. The prisoners were stripped naked in the presence of the men, forced to squat, had their hair cut and were constantly interrogated in an attempt to break morale, ”said Denisova.
Several prisoners were forced to participate in a propaganda video, forcing them to speak Russian.
Denisova revealed that Russian soldiers had shot at prisoners with guns, shot them in the head and made fun of them.
According to Denisov, such actions by Russia are a violation of Article 13 of the Geneva Convention. This article emphasizes the humane treatment of prisoners of war and calls for their protection, in particular against violence or intimidation, as well as against insults and the public interest.
Denisova called on the UN Commission to Investigate Human Rights Violations during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the mission of experts set up by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to take these violations of the rights of prisoners of war in Ukraine into account.
On 1 April, an exchange of prisoners took place in the Zaporizhia region of Ukraine, resulting in the release of 86 Ukrainian soldiers, including 15 women.
