Women over 50 are considered more prone to osteoporosis – ANTARA News Central Kalimantan

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The orthopedic surgeon dr. Oryza Satria, SpOT (K) said women who are over 50 and have had menopause are more prone to osteoporosis, particularly those who have low bone mass.

“The most vulnerable are women who are over 50 and have entered menopause. Especially if in their youth they lacked physical activity, then their calcium and protein indices were lower than recommended. It is at high risk for osteoporosis because it is associated with large bone mass“the Fatmawati Hospital doctor said in a virtual interview Wednesday.

Satria said the risk of osteoporosis occurs in women over the age of 50 or over 60 who have gone through menopause because it is associated with reduced levels of the hormone estrogen which has the potential to reduce bone mass.

According to Satria, low bone mass can increase a person’s experience of osteoporosis. He said that a person’s highest bone density occurs between the ages of 20 and 40. Therefore, adults should be able to achieve maximum bone mass in this golden age in order to avoid osteoporosis in old age.

“If possible, we should get as much as possible large bone mass at that age as our “savings” later in old age. The decrease in bone density will be inevitable, especially in women between the ages of 50 and 60 who have had menopause, “she said.

Satria recommends a woman over the age of 50, particularly over the age of 60, who has been through menopause to screen or check for bone density condition (bone density test or bone mineral density test).

“The spine, pelvis and bones of the hand will be examined by BMD. Next there will be the readings, usually the doctor will read if this is normal, the condition depends on age, if it is osteopenia or low bone density, if it is osteoporosis. It will depend on the type of therapy the doctor wants to administer, “Satria said.

When a person has sustained a wrist fracture at the age of over 50, they also recommend screening. Wrist fractures over the age of 50, Satria said, may show a predictor of fractures in other parts such as the spine and pelvis associated with osteoporosis.

“So the purpose of screening is to know the risk factors. Also (that person) doesn’t fall. In fact, internal and external factors, especially conditions at home and at work, need to be changed if osteoporosis is detected, “she said.

Satria said, osteoporosis conditions include “silent diseaseOr show no clear symptoms until the condition is known only when a fracture or bone density control (BMD) occurs. Therefore, prevention is important to do, especially to achieve maximum bone mass into adulthood and to minimize the risk of fractures in old age.

Although the main factor of osteoporosis is related to older women, Satria added that osteoporosis is not only caused by the aging process but can also occur due to other causes such as underlying diseases such as genetic diseases or hormonal diseases, leading one sedentary lifestyle and eating unhealthy, non-nutritious foods.

“It can attack anyone. Especially if for example there is an underlying genetic disease, such as the obvious one osteogenesis imperfecta that is, where there is a disturbance from birth to growth and bone formation. Then there is also the Marfan syndrome and others, “she said.
