What an exclamation point from RB Leipzig: The second division team won the women’s DFB Cup quarter-finals SGS food from the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga 6:1 and is thus in the semi-finals. There, the defending champions VfL Wolfsburg, runners-up FC Bayern Munich or SC Freiburg are possible opponents. In the DFB.de-Interview speaks Leipzig’s captain Johanna Kaiser (26) about a special evening, the party afterwards and the dream of the final in Cologne.
DFB.de: Johanna Kaiser, how do you look back on the events after a good night’s sleep?
Johanna Kaiser: I have to say that it’s still quite hard to grasp for me. It just feels surreal. It was a great evening with an outstanding result for us. Of course we had expected that a win was within the realm of possibility. But a 4-0 at break? And a 6:1 at the end? No, that was really not to be expected. Nobody would have dared to dream of that. In any case, I woke up today with a lot of positive feelings.
DFB.de: Looking back, was it just a perfect day?
Kaiser: We all just had a great desire for this game – with all the side effects. Floodlights, many fans in the stadium, live broadcast on Sky. The mood was great. What more do you want? Every player has reached their performance limit. In the end, everything fit together perfectly.
DFB.de: What were you thinking on the pitch when it was 3-0 after 20 minutes and 4-0 at half-time?
Kaiser: It was just totally unreal. At times I felt like I was in the wrong movie. Every shot was a hit. We were incredibly efficient. We then deliberately approached the second half as if it were 0-0. We wanted to keep the tension high.
DFB.de: They won both halves – the first 4-0, the second 2-1.
Kaiser: Yes, that too is a nice realization of the evening. Of course, the Essen team put on more pressure after the change and quickly scored a goal. But we were stable defensively and managed to win the game confidently over time.
DFB.de: What happened afterwards?
Kaiser: We first celebrated something in the changing room. Afterwards we went to a bar and started singing a song or two with our fans. It was a nice evening. But of course everything stayed within limits. We’re going to continue at the weekend. Nevertheless, we enjoyed this evening. That’s just part of it after such a success.
DFB.de: In the DFB Cup you first beat Eintracht Frankfurt, now SGS Essen.
Kaiser: It’s going pretty well right now (laughs). In the two games against the first division teams in particular, we showed that we have the potential to play there. At the same time, we know a lot of things that we want and need to improve. We’ll tackle that in the course of the second half of the season in order to further stabilize ourselves. Everything with the goal: In the summer, when we have hopefully made the promotion perfect, to be really suitable for the first division.
DFB.de: Hoffenheim, FC Bayern and serial winners VfL Wolfsburg are now still in the competition.
Kaiser: These are top teams from the Bundesliga, who also set the tone there. Bayern and Wolfsburg are playing in a different league for me. Everything coming now is an absolute bonus. The semi-finals will be a great experience – no matter where and against whom we play. We’re happy to still be there and excited to see who our next opponent will be.
DFB.de: Is there a wishless?
Kaiser: No, actually not. It will definitely be very, very difficult now (laughs). We are the underdog and gladly accept this role. I think that we have developed into a cup scare for the big ones. We have earned this title and would like to continue to fill it with life. It’s clear that it’s getting more difficult from game to game. But we accept every challenge that now awaits us. We throw everything in and see what comes out of it at the end.
DFB.de: The final in Cologne is now just one step away…
Kaiser: That’s correct. It would be indescribable if we could do that as a second division team. We would probably make history with that. But I don’t want to talk too much about it at the moment. Let’s see what happens in the semifinals. After that we’ll see. We are already super proud and totally satisfied with how the season has gone for us so far.
DFB.de: In the short term, you will continue on Sunday with the duel in the 2nd Bundesliga against the pursuer 1. FC Nürnberg. What awaits you there?
Kaiser: A complicated task. Nuremberg has repeatedly shown in the past that they can make life difficult for us. We have to approach this challenge with the same focus as we did with the encounters recently. With three more points we can expand our cushion on the non-promotion steps and take another big step towards the Bundesliga. Because that is of course our main goal. We want to get promoted, the DFB Cup is a great story. But our focus is on the championship.
DFB.de: After the great success, will it be difficult to switch back to everyday life?
Kaiser: No, I’m not worried at all. We’re solid and we want to win every game. It doesn’t matter what the opponent or the competition is called.
