In multiple sclerosis, cells of the central nervous system are destroyed and the spinal cord or brain is affected. The disease can lead to disability, Kaliningrad neurologist Ksenia Krotchik told Klops.
Pathology usually affects young women – 20-40 years old. According to statistics, for every three such patients there is only one, said the neurologist. But the disease also occurs among children.
“In the Kaliningrad region, cases of multiple sclerosis are known in seven girls and one boy,” the expert said.
Symptoms of the disease
The symptoms are very different, it all depends on the lesion. The doctor identified the most common:
- Double vision, rapid decrease in visual acuity,
- Speech difficulty: slow or slurred,
- Difficulty swallowing, choking,
- Decreases or seizures
- Unsteadiness when walking
- Pins and needles feel or feel like they are on the skin
- Incontinence or retention of urine and feces.
The reasons for the development of multiple sclerosis
“It could be a genetic predisposition. In addition to viral infections, smoking, vitamin D deficiency and stress conditions,” said Krotchik.
Handling
Patients are prescribed a special treatment that allows them to achieve remission. Drugs are selected depending on the age of the patient, the course of the disease and many other characteristics. If it is worse, hormonal treatment is used.
“Maintaining a daily routine, getting good sleep and limiting screen time is essential. Children need an extra day off at an educational institution,” said the doctor.
People who have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis during the remission period are not prohibited from swimming in the pool and engaging in exercise therapy. Treatment courses in sanatoriums and brain rehabilitation centers are also recommended.
Important
Overheating in a bathroom, sauna, as well as a hot climate or hypothermia can make the condition worse or worse. In the case of multiple sclerosis, all this is prohibited, warned Ksenia Krotchik.
