Los Angeles, March 27-22 (Notistarz).- Women in the music industry gain more prominence every day inside and behind the scenes, as evidenced by the Billboard Hot100 list, in which during 2020 they had a representation of 20.2 percent.
Currently in companies like Cinq Music, 50 percent of their work team are women with highly competitive positions for the global recording industry.
Figures such as Karol G, Rosalía, Miley Cyrus, Ivonne Galaz, La India, Rebeca León and Leila Cobo, among others, have encouraged the work of more women in the music industry.
Although various studies show that the male gender is still preponderant in this business, day by day changes and advances are noted in the female incursion into the musical spheres.
Although the gaps between men and women in various fields are evident, digital tools and feminist collectives allow women to demonstrate their abilities and raise their voices in today’s society.
Within music there are not only women as artists, now there are more producers, managers, A&R’s, engineers, that is, there is a greater female representation in different areas of high competitiveness in the industry.
A case to be highlighted is that of Andrea Flores, a Mexican who has worked with high-profile artists such as Grandmaster Flash, DJ Premier, Mala Rodríguez, Remmy Valenzuela, and who is currently part of the A&R team of the Cinq Music record label.
His experience in hip hop has made him an important name in the genre and today he works hand in hand with artists like Cozy, iQlover; the 3rd eye Tribe and Vision 55 stamps from Chicago.
Flores acknowledges that the path is complex and points out: “women are taking over many industries, clarifying that in the world of music not necessarily […] you have to be frontline of a band, singing and being the showgirl […] There are new perspectives, a different way of doing things that is giving the industry a refresh”.
In addition to highly competitive positions, groups and spaces for participation are also beginning to play an important role in bringing the genre together and having a stronger voice in the industry.
This turns out to be one of the purposes of Catching Dreams, a cultural project created by Panamanian Yahaira Osiris, who is also the creator of the Latin American Meeting of Women in the Music Industry (MIM LATAM), an event that makes visible the artists and professionals who are together side by side working in the music business.
MIM LATAM had a high participation in its first edition, as more than 200 women, music industry professionals from 10 countries on the continent, participated in the event in 2021.
In a digital world, 2.0 platforms also play a decisive role in building female communities, such is the case of BELatina, a portal that focuses on the cultural lifestyle for “brave women with like-minded ideas and bold ideas that matter ”.
Jeanette Hernández, who, in addition to creating content for this portal, also writes for the well-known music medium Remix and believes that digital platforms “are the trigger that allows us to grow.”
“Social Media -Hernandez maintained- has several tools that allow us to share our work, but it also allows us to connect to ask for advice, and empower ourselves. At the end of the day we are here to make that connection that allows us to grow together.”
In her almost 20 years of experience, Yahaira Osiris went through moments where her ideas were not usually taken into account by her work team, but when a male colleague shared the same contribution, it was taken into account.
Faced with this type of scenario and, as a first tip, Yahaira recommends transmitting security when speaking, because from psychology this makes others feel confidence and conviction with the idea that is being transmitted.
Andrea Flores, for her part, states that academic preparation and skills are vital when making professional differences, because in a competitive world of work, it is a plus to complement academic training, “because this will allow women to have credibility, respect and recognition in this field”.
A third piece of advice is to get rid of the fear of doing things regardless of what others think, in the words of Andrea Flores: “throw yourself into doing things.”
This point is crucial because “it is an invitation for women to recognize their own value within the industry, reflect on the virtues that they have as individuals and feel more confident in their abilities.”
The role of these women shows that the role of the female gender goes beyond stage presence and that this is not a fight with men, teamwork is also a fundamental axis to achieve the best results hand in hand with the artists. .
