Do they have to be naked to enter the museum?… Less than 4% of the works of modern art are of women, but 76% of the nudes are female… This is the premise that formulates the exhibition “Women and Change”, at the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, inaugurated by Queen Margrethe II. The exhibition reviews 150 years of art history, in which many women were relegated to the margins.
“In recent years, many women artists are being rediscovered, they return to the spotlight and their work is exhibited throughout the world, and it is only the beginning,” says Dorthe Juul Rugaard, curator of the exhibition.
Very surprising works stand out, such as this portrait of a Swedish queen smoking a pipe, but also contemporary installations, with the idea of changing the perception of women and regarding the work of art made by women; through almost 120 works.
Along with the master Rafael, Suzanne Valadon is one of the few examples of women artists among art books.
“If you look at the books and realize that out of a hundred monographic catalogs of artists, there are only five women. Only five women out of a hundred”, deplores EvaMarie Lindahl, a Swedish artist.
“It is difficult for people to mention ten women artists. And why aren’t they known names like Picasso or Andy Warhol? Because they simply stayed out, excluded from the canons, denounces Ditte Ejlerskov, another Danish creator.
This protest show raises the age-old inequality and exploitation of women beyond art.
‘Women and Change’ can be seen until August 14 at the ARKEN Museum on the outskirts of Copenhagen.
