VIVA – Woman twice as likely as men to die from an attack asmaa leading charity warned.
Asthma + Lung UK says two thirds of asthma deaths in the last five years have been women – 5,100 compared to 3,200 men.
Reported from The Sunhormones six women included estrogen may be to blame for triggering worse respiratory attacks. Sarah Woolnough, the charity’s chief executive, said gaps in knowledge made it happen.
“Many struggle with debilitating asthma symptoms, get caught in cycles of in and out of hospital and, in some cases, lose their lives,” says Sarah Woolnough.
There are about three million women in the UK with asthma and 2.4 million men. An attack causes the airways to stiffen and make it difficult to breathe.
While boys are more likely to have the condition as children, many grow out of it and women are more likely to develop it in puberty or adulthood.
Asthma + Lung UK says the female hormones estrogen and progesterone can worsen symptoms because they suppress a man’s testosterone levels, which strengthens the airways.
