JAKARTA – Internal medicine specialist as well as consultant rheumatology from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI) dr. Faisal Parlindungan, Sp.PD-KR, said that women have a higher risk of developing osteoporosis than men.
“There are risk factors that cannot be changed, such as gender. Women are more prone to osteoporosis,” said dr. Faisal in talk show virtual “Take Action for Bone Health: Calcium, Healthy Bones, and Immunity in a Pandemic Period”, which was held by Kalbe Farma, Saturday.
dr. Faisal explained, this is due to hormonal differences between women and men. In women, there is the hormone estrogen which serves to prevent bone loss.
However, he continued, with age, women will experience menopause in which the ovaries or ovaries no longer produce eggs and the hormone estrogen.
“So that women who have menopause are very likely to experience bone loss,” said dr. Faisal.
In addition to hormones, the higher risk of osteoporosis in women is also due to the bone structure that is 30 percent less than that of men.
dr. Faisal also said that another risk factor for osteoporosis that cannot be changed is a family history of osteoporosis. He also said Asians are more susceptible to the disease.
