Liputan6.com, Jakarta Assembly Data Osteoporosis Indonesia states that osteoporosis or bone loss is 4 times more common in women than men.
According to the Medical Nutrition Expert, FKUI-RSCM Prof. Dr. dr. Saptawati Bardosono, MSc, 41.8 percent of men and 90 percent of women experienced reduced bone density or osteopenia. This condition will quickly lead to its occurrence osteoporosis.
“In fact, 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men already suffer from osteoporosis,” said Saptawati in the CDR webinar, Thursday (22/10/2020).
He added, the thing that is feared by osteoporosis is fractures. Many things cause fractures, but in the context of osteoporosis, fractures are caused by increased bone loss in the body, generally due to the aging process as well as lifestyle, diet and physical activity factors.
“Maybe we have certain medical conditions that have to take certain drugs so that we have to lose our bone mass.”
Physiologically, women will experience pregnancy and lactation which will increase the loss of bone mass. Women will also reach a period of stopping their period, which automatically loses the hormone estrogen which has been able to maintain bone health.
“This is the reason why women are more at risk osteoporosis.”
