Women and the Vendée Globe, it’s a beautiful love story. However, they are not very numerous to have participated in the Everest of the seas.
Over the years, only ten women have been able to complete the world tour by returning to Sables-d’Olonne, including four for this one 2020-2021 edition: Clarisse Cremer, Pip Hare, Miranda Merron and Alexia Barrier.
Catherine Chabaud the first
Catherine Chabaud is forever the first woman to complete a Vendée Globe. It was in 1996-1997 when she finished 6th. During her second participation in 2000-2001, she retired after dismasting.
Isabelle Autissier, who founded the Imoca association in 1991 with Christophe Auguin, Alain Gautier and Jean-Luc Van den Heede, took part in the Vendée Globe 1996-1997 but ended up out of the race following a stopover to repair her rudders. During this edition, she turned around to search, in vain, Gerry Roufs missing in the Pacific.
MacArthur the example
Ellen MacArthur is one of the youngest competitors to have taken part in the Vendée Globe since she was only 24 years old when she finished 2nd in 2000-2001. aboard Kinfisher, it is on par with the competition, only ahead of Michel Desjoyeaux …
Anne Liardet is the third woman to have finished the Vendée Globe in the 2004-2005 edition (11th), just ahead of Karen Leibovici (13th), became the 4th woman to complete the Vendée Globe.
Samantha Davies discovered the Vendée Globe in 2008-2009 aboard Roxy with which she finished in 4th place.
Dee Caffari is the first woman to have completed a round-the-world trip in both directions. The first time “upside down”, against winds and currents in 2006 and a second time during the Vendée Globe 2008-2009 (6th).
Six at once!
No other sailor will take the start until 2020 and a record entry of six skippers.
Clarisse Cremer (Banque Populaire X) erases Ellen MacArthur from the shelves, 12th in 87 days. Pip Hare, Miranda merron and Alexia Barrier are classified while Sam Davies and Isabelle Joschke end their tour of the world unclassified.
