Woman’sBack® is the first backpack specially designed and patented to reduce the risk of lymphedema in women who have had breast cancer and encourages them to lead an active life without limitations. It was born from the personal experience of Maria Prandi, who in 2015 was diagnosed with breast cancer and that same year underwent surgery to treat it.
The following summer, María, who is in love with the mountains, promised herself that she would go on a trip in the Pyrenees, and for this she needed to carry a backpack. Doctors warned her that wearing a backpack could lead to lymphedema on her arm. She looked for a backpack that would solve her need, but did not find one, so she decided to design her own backpack.
For this, it has been necessary to develop a closure system for a normal backpack, which with only three steps allows weight to be carried and frees the intervened area from any pressure. The adaptation of the system is carried out by hand in Barcelona, since all the backpacks are personalized and adapted for each woman since depending on where the intervention has been carried out, a modification is made on the right or left side.
Verkami campaign
Since the project began, the Alpina brand backpacks have been modified by hand, which means that the cost and final price of these is higher, and that, in addition, orders take time to leave and reach the clients, since production right now is very limited.
However, since last Tuesday, December 14, a campaign has been started in Verkami that will help them to be more efficient and faster, and to be able to offer a product at a cheaper price without losing the quality of the backpack, since it has gone to outsource production.
The goal is to get 3,500 euros for a first production of 300-unit backpacks. The backpacks will be blue or red and will have a capacity of 25 liters.
