A shocking discovery was made at Golden Gate Park on Sunday evening when a woman’s body was found inside a duffle bag, according to reports from the San Francisco Standard. Police were called to the scene on Fulton Street near 22nd Avenue on the north side of the park after a dog walker made the gruesome discovery around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
The area surrounding 22nd Avenue and Fulton was quiet by Monday morning, but just a mile away, tens-of-thousands of Outside Lands festival goers had packed the park over the weekend. The grisly discovery was made off a walkway, raising concerns among residents and visitors alike.
Neighbor Michele Hunnewell expressed her shock and sadness over the incident, stating, “It’s horrifying. It’s a very sad, sad circumstance. And, our neighbors… Everybody came out of the house because the officers were there. They had it all taped off. And people were just aghast. I mean, I shocked!”
Hunnewell, who lives nearby, was informed of the incident by a police officer who came to her front door asking for camera footage. She described the neighborhood as not being the kind where such incidents normally occur and expressed disappointment that it happened on a nice weekend.
The discovery was made close to the three-day Outside Lands music festival, and organizers have directed questions to the police department. Megan Hiatt, who grew up in The Richmond, was informed of the incident during her early morning run and expressed her horror, saying, “I have a 12-year-old that I would normally be happy to let them wander through the park by themselves. So yeah, completely horrifying…”
The San Francisco Police Department released an update overnight, stating that a witness had informed officers about an ”unresponsive adult female“ and called the police. Despite the shocking incident, those who frequent the area still feel safe, acknowledging that random incidents can happen anywhere.
ABC7 News reached out to District Supervisor Connie Chan for comment, and any response will be included in a later update. The SFPD has launched an active homicide investigation and is urging anyone with information to contact the SFPD 24-hour Tip Line or Text a Tip to TIP411.
As the investigation continues, ABC7 News will provide the latest updates on this developing story.
