Woman-woman love in Hollywood cinema

In a time of vindication of the LGBTIQ + movement, the work “Hidden in the cinema”, by Rosi Legido shows a vision of classic cinema in which lesbians were hidden and offers some keys to reinterpret it.

In Hollywood movies we discover more and more characters and more varied

Rosi has written “Escondidas en el cine” (censorship and sapphic characters), a book in which she shows keys to understanding certain Hollywood and classic European films in which lesbians appear blurred to avoid censors, as well as the trajectory she is reaching in the cinema the visibility of this type of personages.

The author has published her work with LES editorial, since it is the first exclusively LGBTIQ + publishing house in Spain, and for Legido it is a “benchmark with works of all kinds of genres.

“Young people are becoming more and more aware. It is not the Spain of decades ago, but we cannot forget the discrimination, school assaults, harassment, mockery or beatings that many children or adults still suffer for the fact of being gay or lesbian, and of course transsexual people, ”said Legido.

The current panorama is more diverse and is reinforced by families with trans, homosexual children, who offer visibility of affective-sexual diversity.

There are more and more LGBTIQ + associations even in small towns, and there are important legal achievements, but many demands are still needed, especially regarding lesbian women.

In the programs “of the heart” there is no lack of gay on duty, the more “pen” the better; reminiscent of the so-called Sissy of the comedies of the cinema of the beginning of the 20th century. It is discriminatory that the pen is related to what is funny or grotesque since, for example, in the news it is not allowed. In serious programs it seems that gays, and of course lesbians, have to remain in the closet. In fact, there are more famous men who publicly acknowledge their homosexuality than women.

In the sixties, scantily clad lesbians arrive to satisfy a heterosexual male desire; In the eighties, independent cinema is responsible for titles with lesbian diversity and, since then, characters have been incorporated, but very little by little.

“As real life progresses, this is how it is embodied in fiction. Now that path has already been traveled, but more stories and more lesbian characters are missing. Diverse and plural. May the day come when the so-called “gay cinema” is not necessary, because the appearance of homosexual characters in the film is natural and normal. That these are not the exception of the film or its peculiarity. For that to happen, LGBTIQ + Festivals are still very necessary, such as Working Women’s Day or Gay Pride. ”, Sentenced the writer.
