A woman with breast cancer was the first patient to be treated with the RADIXACT X7 linear accelerator, which is installed in the Radiotherapy unit of the Hospital de Clínicas in La Paz.
The head of that unit, Lilian Zamuriano Corrales, reported that after several steps taken, the operation of this equipment became a reality and now it is the turn of the technical part at the beginning of the treatments.
“All the technicians, around 15 people, were working to start with the first patient to be treated, which is a woman with limited resources who suffers from breast cancer, and the second patient begins treatment in the afternoon, this is a historic event for the entire country, “said Zamuriano.
The team that works in the treatment of cancer patients is made up of two Argentine professionals who carry out the training of personnel, a North American for oximetry controls, three radio oncologists, three technologists, a dosimetrist, a general practitioner, a graduate in nursing from radio therapy and support group.
He pointed out that all radiotherapy equipment always attacks risky (healthy) organs, but the linear accelerator minimizes the dose to other areas and targets only the tumor, and by having several access doors, because the equipment rotates, it is performed better treatment.
The patient, who asked not to be identified, stressed that La Paz has the equipment, and said that her experience was calm, because she did not feel any type of pain.
“Do not hesitate and leave your confidence to the doctors and from here you will come out healthy,” said the enthusiastic woman.
