Ada Daniel has lived for several years at Ashmere Nursing Home in Derbyshire, England. The woman crossed the milestone of 108 years, celebrated by staff and housemates, and explained the secret to her longevity: choosing to have dogs instead of children. In fact, Ada was the lucky owner of numerous greyhounds, a breed best known for their high running speed, but she never became a mother. So, with great irony, she said that in all likelihood, her preference for these animals rather than children is what has earned her such a long life.
In honor of her birthday, the nursing home requested greeting cards for her, resulting in approximately 300 cards. The staff decided to throw a surprise party for her complete with tea and balloons given with the greeting cards.
Activities Coordinator Kelly Goucher said, “Ada doesn’t have many relatives left. She’s never had children, so she doesn’t have grandchildren, but we wanted to get as many wishes as possible for her. She likes people to know her for her age.” So after launching the call on Facebook, the staff was surprised to see how many users decided to join the occasion by sending Ada a card. The same had been done three years earlier, when the old woman celebrated her 105th birthday and received about 200 tickets as a gift.
“She’s definitely a character,” Goucher said. “I once asked her what her secret was and she said it was having dogs and not kids. She was very touched about her birthday and counting down to the big day. We also got banners with her picture and balloons with her name on them. “
What do you think of the “secret” of Ada’s long life?
