Woman set fire to several houses and robbed store with a gun as soon as she was free: accusation in New York – El Diario NY

Amanda Burnside, a trans woman from Southampton (Long Island, NY) who was accused of setting fires in three houses, was processed as a suspect for armed robbery less than two hours after being released without bail, benefiting from the controversial penal reform.

A judge released Burnside on his own recognizance on Monday, despite prosecutors’ request that bail be set at $500,000 or $1 million. Almost immediately the District Attorney’s Office Suffolk county accused her of armed robbery, reported Fox News.

The judge had ordered him to report for supervised release within 72 hours. Instead, according to authorities, he waited less than two hours before acquire a knife and try to rob a Dollar Tree store.

“The danger that this defendant posed to society could never be adequately considered to the extent that dangerousness is not a bail factor that judges can consider under New York state law.”

The fiasco prompted District Attorney Ray Tierney, the lead prosecutor in the Gilgo Beach serial killer case, to again criticize the state’s bail laws. “Clearly, the dangerousness of this accused, who supposedly tried to set fire to three houseswas not adequately considered, given that two hours after his arraignment, he allegedly committed another serious and violent crime,” Tierney said Monday night.

“Furthermore, the danger this defendant posed to society could never be adequately considered to the extent that dangerousness is not a bail factor that judges can consider under New York State law.”
