A woman Turki seriously injured after being shot in the vicinity of the honorary Swedish consulate. The woman is now in critical condition.
Reported from AFPOn Wednesday (2/8), the local governor’s office said the attack was carried out by a “mentally disabled” person in the Konak district of Izmir.
The attack took place outside Sweden’s honorary consulate, private broadcaster NTV reported. The injured woman, who worked as a secretary in a diplomatic mission. Now his condition is critical.
Turkish authorities attempted to stop the assailant with pistol shots. Turkish authorities are investigating this attack.
The Swedish Foreign Ministry’s press service in Stockholm confirmed the attack and said in an email to AFP that it was “in close contact” with the consulate general in Istanbul.
“The Swedish Consul General will travel to Izmir tomorrow to be informed of the situation and express his condolences,” the email said.
Sweden’s foreign ministry said it “would not comment on threat scenarios against foreign missions or security measures taken, as doing so could go against the objectives of such actions”.
