(CNN) A woman driving by found a bear cub with its head completely stuck in a plastic container on a road in eastern Pennsylvania and rescued it on Wednesday.

Sarah Lindgren, who works for Pennsylvania’s parks department, was driving through a small village in upstate Pennsylvania when she spotted a bear cub on the side of a road.

“At first I thought it was dead,” Lindgren said, as it lay with its head stuck in the container.

But as I got closer, the cub slowly noticed me. Lindgren, who knew what to do in his line of work, quickly grabbed the container and gently called out to the cub, who was resisting and flapping its legs. After a struggle that lasted about 10 seconds, the cub was freed.

“If I hadn’t helped him, he wouldn’t have lasted another day. He was very weak and dehydrated,” Lindgren said. Moreover, the side of the road at the site was a steep embankment, and a stream was flowing below. A cub would have died if it had fallen into a river and had its container filled with water, had been run over by a car, or had become dehydrated.

Lindgren said the cub was probably around eight months old and eventually climbed a tree to rest. She couldn’t see her mother, but it was determined that she could survive on her own if she had grown this far.

Black bears generally leave the nest at about three months of age and are independent from their mothers by seven months, according to state wildlife conservation officials.
