A 34-year-old woman was taken into custody after hundreds of cockroaches were released during an altercation that erupted during an arraignment at a courthouse in upstate New York.

The chaos forced the closure of the court to carry out fumigation work on Tuesday. According to judicial officials, the confrontation broke out in Albany, state capital, during proceedings in the City Court after the arrest of four people at the state capitol.

A defendant who began filming court proceedings was told to stop. In the altercation that followed, hundreds of cockroaches brought to the courthouse in plastic containers were released, under the state court system.

The release of the insects was being investigated after the courthouse was closed for the rest of the day due to fumigation. Court officials arrested an unidentified woman at the hearing on charges related to the altercation, including disorderly conduct, obstruction of government administration and tampering with physical evidence.

She was then released. “What happened is not defense or activism, it is criminal behavior with the intention of interrupting a process and causing damage,” denounced a statement from the Office of Court Administration, quoted by Pix11.
