Woman protests on Cannes red carpet against sexual violence in Ukraine | NOW

During a premiere at the Cannes festival on Friday evening, a woman protested against sexual violence against women in Ukraine. The woman took off a large part of her clothes on the red carpet. She had written the text Stop raping us in paint on her body. Her back was covered in red paint, dripping blood from her body. She had painted the colors of the Ukrainian flag on the front of her body.

Festival security quickly intervened and removed the half-naked woman from the red carpet. Later in the evening, the feminist organization Scum posted a statement on Twitter, claiming the incident. This message also made it clear that the woman was demonstrating against the sexual violence of Russian soldiers against Ukrainian women.

The incident took place during the premiere of director George Miller’s film Three Thousand Years of Longing. It is not clear how the woman managed to get on the red carpet. The festival grounds, and certainly the premieres, have above-average security. Visitors must have an accreditation and are checked several times before they are on the red carpet.

The war in Ukraine was also discussed on the opening night that took place on Tuesday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky then addressed the audience and called on the international film world to continue raising its voice against the Russian invasion of his country. He made a comparison with Charlie Chaplin, who in 1940 tried to warn the world about Hitler with his film The Great Dictator.
