Can you actually still speak of ‘rent’ if the bill for gas and electricity alone is much higher than the entire all-in rent? No, according to the new landlord, who bought the property from the Victoria Hotel in 2015. A fixed price of 400 guilders may have been agreed 35 years ago, but in 2022 this can no longer be maintained. So it is time for a major adjustment, certainly in light of the ever-rising energy prices.
