Woman Killed in Hudson Valley Flash Flood; Governor Declares State of Emergency

A woman was killed as she tried to leave her home with her dog in the Hudson Valley, swept away by a flash flood, multiple media reported.

Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in Orange County, northwest of New York City, and Ontario County, in the center of the state, noting that up to 200 mm of rain had created “life-threatening conditions due to flash flooding”.

“We are approaching a critical point in this weather event”said Ms. Hochul.

washed out roads

By Sunday evening, more than 12,000 customers had been without power, according to his office, as heavy rains washed away roads and trapped people in their cars or homes.

As of 8 p.m. (midnight GMT), highways were closed in at least five counties in the state, including Westchester, which is just north of New York and borders the Hudson River.

The governor’s office said the state should expect further storms on Monday.
