Woman kidnapped by Hamas gives birth in captivity, Israeli Prime Minister’s wife appeals for release of hostages

A woman kidnapped by Hamas during the October 7 attack in Israel has given birth in Gaza, the wife of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a letter published today by the Prime Minister’s Office, AFP reported.

“One of the women kidnapped by Hamas was pregnant. She gave birth to her baby in captivity,” Sarah Netanyahu wrote in a letter in English addressed to US First Lady Jill Biden.

Sara Netanyahu asks Jill Biden to act “for the release of the Israeli hostages.”

Israel estimates that 239 people were abducted during the October 7 attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement, which killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians.

Israeli authorities have not released the identities or other details of the hostages. In her letter, Mrs. Netanyahu mentions 32 detained children, including a ten-month-old baby.

The Hostage Families Forum identified this baby as Kfir Bibas, nine months old at the time of his abduction in Kibbutz Nir Oz along with his brother Ariel (age 4) and his parents Yarden and Shiri.

“We must speak on behalf of these children. We must call for their immediate release and that of the other hostages,” wrote Sara Netanyahu.

The prime minister’s office said Mrs Netanyahu had also written to the wives of several other world leaders.

Qatar is currently mediating in an attempt to secure the release of hostages in exchange for a ceasefire and the release of Palestinians in Israeli prisons, BTA reported.

US President Joe Biden said yesterday that he believed in the possibility of an agreement, about which Israeli officials spoke cautiously, recalling that the goal of the war was to “destroy” Hamas and free all hostages.
