Woman jumps off the Verrazzano Bridge in Brooklyn | Univision 41 New York WXTV

On Tuesday afternoon, the NYPD responded to an emergency call to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. This indicated that a woman jumped from there, according to NYPD reports.

It is believed that the woman is about 20 years old; however, his identification was not immediately available. Her condition is also unknown.

MTA confirmed police activity on the lower level of the Brooklyn-bound bridge and said the NYPD is handling the investigation.

The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge magnet for suicides

When it opened in 1964, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, connecting Brooklyn and Staten Island, became a monumental gateway to New York Harbor. However, over time it became the scene of multiple suicides and suicide attempts. For example, in 2013-14 there were 14 suicide attempts, seven of which were successful.

In 2020, in a two-week period in 2020, there were three suicide attempts, two of which were successful.

In July 2021, a 58-year-old man jumped from the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and his jump was captured on surveillance video, SIlive.com reported at the time.

A $32.8 million fence will be installed in the Verrazzano-Narrows

Likewise, last week, a contract for $32.8 million to install a permanent fence for suicide prevention on the entire Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, which is expected to be completed within two years.

  1. Our family is devastated by the loss! It was my cousin who jumed this week. Does NY state not care for the lives of people? keeping this death trap/magnet operating as is?
