During the carnival parade in Prinsenbeek, part of a carnival car fell on the public on Sunday afternoon. One woman was injured. Her son escaped unharmed.
The accident happened around two o’clock on the Kapelstraat during the parade in the so-called Boemeldonck. The object has a diameter of two meters, it came down about ten meters for unknown reasons.
Shoulder broken
The woman was watching the parade with her son. She probably has a broken shoulder and was taken to hospital in an ambulance.
Her son was checked in an ambulance, but he was not injured, police said.
‘We had to lift it with five people’
Ries van der Borst stood on the spot where the accident happened. “I saw a doll’s hat fall down. At first I thought the hat got stuck behind a tree, but I think that tree eventually broke the fall.”
According to him, the accident looked very dire. More people were standing there watching. In addition, the accident happened near a grandstand where children were watching the parade. They also saw the accident with their own eyes.
Ries, together with bystanders, carried the hat away. “We had to lift it with five people, it was that heavy.”
Parade resumed
Robbert Janssen of the Beeckse Algemene Karnavalstichting (BAK) thinks it is terrible what has happened. He says it is lucky that there are no more injured. According to the organization, it seems that it was not the rain that caused the hat to come down.
The parade was initially halted, but started running again around 3:15 p.m. “The police have investigated the matter and they have indicated that the parade can run again.”
The car in which it went wrong was also allowed to continue driving. “They have also discussed this with the victim’s family,” said Jansen. According to a bystander, the builders of the car in question were depressed, but received loud applause as they started driving.
Large audience
The parade in Prinsenbeek was canceled with carnival due to corona and was postponed until this Pentecost weekend. The parade always attracts a lot of attention, even with the rain on Sunday, many people are watching from the side. Nearly sixty cars are taking part. According to BAK secretary Janssen, the parade will be over by half past six on Sunday evening.
In the video below, which is circulating on Twitter, you can see that part of the carnival wagon comes down.
