Woman infected 27 customers at Starbucks. Employees wore a mask and escaped

A woman with covid-19 who was at a Starbucks coffee shop in Paju, a town near the capital Seoul, South Korea, infected 27 customers who were at the establishment, giving rise to an outbreak that, according to the latest data, has already affected 66 people. The four employees, who were wearing masks, escaped general contagion.

The woman will have entered the establishment on August 8, and after being served, she went up to the second floor of the cafeteria and sat down near the stairs, at a table that had an air conditioning outlet on top, which may have contributed to spread the virus in a space with the windows closed, according to the South Korean press. It left at 10 pm, when Starbucks closed.

The next day he started showing symptoms of covid-19, went to the doctor and tested positive for the new coronavirus. In the days that followed, 27 people who were in the establishment were also diagnosed with the disease and, from the first infected, the outbreak has already reached 66 people.

However, the four employees of the establishment were not infected, which can be explained by the fact that they wear a mask, which was not the case with customers, who took off their masks to eat and drink.

“As we witnessed at Starbucks in Paju, the virus can spread when people are not wearing a mask while eating,” said Jung Eun-kyeong, responsible for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in South Korea.
