Erabaru.net. Following a viral cup noodle recipe turned disastrous for a woman in China who says she nearly burned down her flat.
Chuang Qiaoyu took to Chinese social media last Tuesday (Feb 22) to share his accident.
“Because of my cup of instant noodles, my flat almost caught fire,” he wrote.
Chuang had come across a recipe for making steamed eggs using leftover soup from cup noodles, which piqued his curiosity.
The instructions also seem pretty simple – add two beaten eggs to the rest of the soup and pop them in the microwave for up to two minutes.
“However, after two or three minutes, the cup noodles suddenly caught fire, and there was smoke coming out of the microwave,” Chuang recalled in his post.
Fortunately, he managed to extinguish the fire after turning off the microwave.
In the same post, Chuang also shared some of the possible causes of the accident.
“This is where I made a mistake. Cup noodles are not meant to be put in the microwave, and I did not remove the aluminum foil cover before heating them.
“The aluminum foil caught fire in the microwave, and the cup noodles caught fire.”
So, is it actually safe to heat cup noodles using a microwave?
Yes, according to an experiment conducted by YouTube channel HuntingWaterfalls — but pay attention to the cup noodle packaging.
This includes aluminum foil lids like Chuang’s boxes and those in Styrofoam cups, which can pose a health risk when heated in the microwave.
While Chuang may have gotten away with just a broken microwave, other teens trying to keep up with other viral food videos weren’t so lucky.
In 2019, 14-year-old Zhou and his friend 12-year-old Peng saw a video teaching viewers how to make popcorn using a drink can.
Following the video’s instructions, the two place corn kernels in an empty aluminum can and light alcohol in another aluminum can placed underneath.
Due to its high alcohol content, their tools exploded when Zhou tried to light them, causing the two girls to suffer severe burns.
Both were taken to the hospital.
Zhou suffered burns over 96 percent of his body and eventually died from his injuries two weeks later.
Peng survived the incident. (yn)
