A woman from Bihor infected with the West Nile virus died a few days ago at the Oradea County Hospital.
The information was made public by the National Institute of Public Health and confirmed BIHOREAN by DSP Bihor.
“It is about a 62-year-old woman. She was initially admitted to the Anesthesia and Intensive Care Department of the Oradea County Hospital. Her evolution being favorable, she was then moved to the ward, where she unfortunately died on September 8 The patient had other associated diseases”, he detailed on Friday, for BihorDr. Călin Sonea, chief physician in the Bihor Public Health Directorate.
He also stated that, currently, there are no other cases of West Nile virus infection in the county.
Apparently, the deceased patient would have contracted the virus after being bitten by an infected mosquito during a vacation spent a few weeks ago in the counties of Mureş and Harghita.
To protect against West Nile virus, the population is advised to avoid exposure to mosquitoes by wearing long-sleeved clothing and long pants, using chemical mosquito repellents, preventing them from entering the house (through window screens), ensure the draining of puddles of water around the household, to remove containers of standing water and household garbage from the household.
The first symptoms of the infection are fever, nausea and muscle pain, the onset being similar to viruses. In about 80% of cases there are no symptoms of the disease.
