Miriam Rincones never thought that in the middle of a tough battle against breast cancer She was going to give birth, it was not in her plans, but it happened and her story is an example of hope.
While undergoing chemotherapies and constant medical examinations, Miriam was six months pregnant. He came to think that the dizziness, common in these stages of pregnancy, was a product of the chemotherapy. Even when her belly began to grow, she feared it might have been a tumor.
“I started to feel bad, normal things that chemotherapy caused me, I started vomiting, I felt very nauseous, dizzy… and well, I thought that was the cause. But since they do check-ups every six months, in one of those they sent me a total abdominal exam and I told my doctor that my belly felt very big,” the woman said.

But the surprise he got was immense. “’I’ve gotten very paunchy, I’m afraid that I have a tumor, that I have something else,’ I told him. She decided to examine me in depth and my surprise was enormous: ‘Miriam, if you knew what you had in your belly,’ she told me, and when I asked her if it was cancer Again, he broke the news to me: ‘No, you have a baby. He’s six months old and he’s a boy.’”
Miriam was shocked. The initial medical recommendation was to terminate the pregnancy, because it was very likely that the child’s health would have been affected by the procedures. “They referred me to the gynecologist, he examined me and told me that the child was very big and he did not dare to take him out. If God allowed him to be ‘camouflaged’ until this day, it is because He has His purpose for him, he told me. Then I decided: I’m going to have him, because I know the child is fine.”
Experts say that more and more young women are suffering from breast cancer.

The next step was to suspend treatment while Jesus David, as he named him, came into the world. That was the medical guidance, since the baby had been exposed to cancer treatments since conception. Miriam was ordered a specialized ultrasound to check her son’s condition and from then on attended regular prenatal check-ups. Everything went smoothly until labor was induced at 36 weeks.
After surgery, 15 chemotherapies and 25 radiotherapiesMiriam was declared free of the disease and now takes an oral chemo pill every night and attends check-ups every six months to confirm that the cancer is under control.
Jorge Zaccaro Arregocésan oncological surgeon at Quimiosalud, an allied institution of Coosalud EPS, pointed out that breast cancer is increasingly common in women under 40 years of age.
“Regarding self-examination, for example, I used to say that women over 40 should do it; today I tell women to do it from a young age. “I have patients under 20 years old diagnosed with breast cancer,” he explained.

Experts consulted by Coosalud agree that a diagnosis of breast cancer does not represent a limitation for women with the intention of procreating. “Being diagnosed should not be a factor in giving up on motherhood. The ovaries remain functional in many women after completing chemotherapy and even hormone therapy treatments,” Zaccaro highlights.
For its part, Manuel Dangond Acosta, a clinical oncologist at Quimiosalud, emphasizes the importance of having medical support to avoid complications. “What you have to keep in mind is that cancer treatment, of any type, during the first trimester of pregnancy is definitely contraindicated,” he said.
It is worth mentioning that starting in the second trimester, a woman can complete her pregnancy process and continue undergoing oncological treatment simultaneously without any problem.
