She had ordered a dress, shoes and a scale. When the woman from Marburg in Hesse opened the package from the online mail order company Shein, she was stung by a scorpion.
The woman reacted quickly, cut her finger so that the blood would flush out as much poison as possible and called the neighbor. He killed the scorpion and informed the police. The doctors at the hospital later determined that it was probably a yellow Mediterranean scorpion. It is one of the most poisonous scorpions in the world.
No serious consequences
The incident happened on October 30th and the woman from Marburg spent 16 hours in the hospital. She has since been released without any major consequences. The incident has now become known, among other things, because she warns her followers on Instagram about packages from Shein.
It was only in mid-October that a woman from Bristol, England, also found a scorpion in a package.
Criticism of online mail order companies from China is growing
Shein is not the only platform from China that is conspicuous for its lack of security and production standards. Last year, the Federal Network Agency examined 5,000 goods from Shein, Temu, AliExpress and Co. More than 90 percent did not comply with EU safety regulations. The TÜV criticizesthat there are sharp edges on children’s toys, for example.
At the end of October, the EU also opened proceedings against Temu. It is being investigated whether the platform takes sufficient action against the sale of illegal products.
