Woman encounters large family in The Journey of Your Genes

Canisha is often asked by people where she comes from, she says. “The Netherlands”, is her answer. When people then ask where her parents are from, she has to admit that she doesn’t really know exactly. Her father was born as a baby in a white family, while he was not white. It soon became apparent that Canisha’s grandmother had an affair with an African-American soldier.

Her father passed away a few years ago. “I never discussed with my father who his father might be.” Canisha hopes to gain clarity about this with the help of the program.

Through DNA testing, they soon find a match: Monique. She turns out to be an aunt of Canisha; a half sister of her father. She is also the child of the American soldier and a Dutch woman. Monique found her father in 2019 thanks to DNA research, but then immediately found out that he had already died in 2017. She does get to know a huge family. Her father turns out to have seven children and two illegitimate children. And so Canisha’s father, but she didn’t know that yet.

Canisha and Monique meet for the first time. “Oh, she’s not that tall either,” Canisha exclaims immediately. “You really look like it. (…) A bit like my father”, Canisha said about her new aunt. Monique previously noted that Canisha resembles her daughter.

During the emotional meeting, they immediately call the family in the United States. And that’s how Canisha immediately meets Aunt Tiffany.
