A 24-year-old woman suffered from hallucinations, insomnia and incontinence for months after consuming a plate of sushi she bought at a service station and left in the refrigerator for five days.
This situation was reported by Chubby Emu, associate professor and doctor in Chicago at the University of Illinois, on his youtube channel where he reports rare medical cases that he or his colleagues followed.
This time, Chubby Emu spoke of a patient who wanted to identify only as JC, to preserve the woman’s identity.
It turns out that the patient, after a long day at work, noticed that she hadn’t eaten all day and there were no restaurants open anymore, so she remembered to eat some sushi pieces that she had bought five days ago at a service station and that kept in the fridge.
Days later, JC began to spend the nights in his arms, anxious and with the feeling that her heart was “beating out of the neck”, reports the doctor, and spent months suffering from malnutrition, incontinence and hallucinations of animals to climbing the walls and under your skin.
JC also had the feeling that his stomach was shaking and became restless before going to the bathroom, like a fish from side to side “hitting her in the belly”, said the doctor, according to reports that the patient did. Now, what looked like a fish was, after all, a tapeworm, a parasitic worm, a giant that had been in JC’s stomach for nine months.
In fact, after several blood tests and analyzes and two visits to the hospital due to seizures, doctors discovered that in addition to the giant tapeworm, there were already eggs and fragments of the parasite in the patient’s body.
This tapeworm, called diphyllobothrium latum, can grow up to 15 meters inside the body. JC was then medicated with a dose of an anti-worming medication, praziquantel, and in the meantime managed to recover.
