The driver of the car, a 53-year-old man who was probably intoxicated by alcohol, was said to have backed up into a ditch on Chemin de la Pointe at around 10 p.m. His car, in which there were four people, overturned.
The victim, a 33-year-old woman from Saint-Damase, lost her life in the accident. The other three occupants, including the driver, suffered only minor injuries. They were taken to the hospital as a preventive measure, detailed Lieutenant Nathalie Fréchette of the Memphremagog Police Authority.
The identity of the victim has not been released.
The driver, a man living in Shefford, was arrested for refusing to provide a breath sample. He also persisted, once at the hospital, in not providing a blood sample to determine his blood alcohol level.
The man with no previous criminal record has been released pending trial. Among other things, he could face a charge of impaired driving causing death.
