Woman Diagnosed with Sepsis After Accidental Crab Stabbing: A Warning for Seafood Handlers

It is often said that diseases enter through the mouth, but in fact, germs can also enter the body through skin wounds and cause serious illness at any time. A 40-year-old woman in Ningbo accidentally stabbed her palm while cleaning swimming crabs. Two hours later, she developed a high fever of 39°C. She went into shock when she was sent to the hospital the next day, and was eventually diagnosed with sepsis.

according to”The Paper“reported that while cleaning swimming crabs, 40-year-old Ms. Wang was stabbed by a crab shell on the palm of her left hand, but the bleeding stopped quickly. Unexpectedly, 2 hours later, her body temperature exceeded 39°C and she kept shivering. She went to a nearby hospital for treatment, but her symptoms did not subside and she was sent to the emergency room the next day.

Doctors in the emergency department said that the patient suffered from septic shock, fever, nausea, and vomiting when he was sent to the hospital. The calcitonin level reached 9.37ng/ml, which was more than 200 times the normal level, and he was diagnosed with sepsis.

Doctors immediately launched rescue operations. In the early morning of that day, the patient developed an infection storm. His upper and lower blood pressures were only 80 and 45 mmHg respectively, his heart rate was more than 180 times per minute, and his cardiac systolic function was weakened.

As the drug treatment was increased to the limit, the patient still did not improve. Doctors used artificial heart and lung technology (ECMO) to finally stabilize the patient’s condition and he has been discharged from the hospital.

Reports indicate that hospital examinations failed to identify the bacterial or viral infection that caused the sepsis, but it is believed to have been caused by an infection caused by puncturing the hands while washing crabs. Severe sepsis can lead to organ dysfunction, circulatory disorders, and high mortality. Fortunately, Ms. Wang is in good health and does not have liver disease or other long-term diseases. Only by receiving timely treatment can she save her life.

Earlier, a 52-year-old man in Hangzhou was pricked on his finger while cleaning crayfish. He fell into a coma the next day and developed severe sepsis and shock. In addition, he had multiple long-term diseases, and his condition took a turn for the worse. He died of multiple organ failure three days later. .

Sepsis can cause organ failure

Dr. Chen Jinsong, President of the Hong Kong Society of Critical Care Medicine, said that septicemia is a serious bacterial infection that causes body organ failure. Regarding the causes of sepsis, Dr. Chen said that it is related to pathogens (such as bacteria) and the patient’s resistance. Some evil bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus A, flesh-eating bacteria (necrotizing fasciitis caused by Vibrio vulnificus), etc. , can cause the condition to deteriorate rapidly.

Young children and the elderly are high-risk groups

Symptoms of sepsis include: high fever, low blood pressure, confusion, decreased urination (due to decreased kidney function), asthma, etc. Medical staff will conduct a series of tests on the patient to detect whether the concentration of white blood cells and blood lactate is too high to understand the degree of bacterial infection in the patient.

In fact, sepsis can occur at any age. Young children and the elderly have weaker resistance and are more likely to contract septicemia. Therefore, the age mortality rate of this disease is like the sides of a bathtub pointing upwards.

Mortality rate can be as high as 50%

Because sepsis has a high mortality rate, mentioning the disease often conjures up images of life hanging by a thread if you develop it. This depends on how serious the condition is. If a patient is so bad as to need a ventilator to assist breathing due to pneumonia, the mortality rate has reached one-third; if the patient has kidney failure and needs dialysis, the mortality rate is as high as one-half.

The Center for Food Safety points out that people who eat raw or undercooked contaminated seafood or whose wounds come into contact with seawater, including cuts and exposed wounds when handling raw seafood, may be infected with Vibrio vulnificus.

The incubation period of foodborne Vibrio vulnificus infection ranges from 12 hours to several days. Generally speaking, it is rare for healthy people to be infected by Vibrio vulnificus from food, but it can occasionally cause gastroenteritis symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain that heal on their own. However, in chronically ill people, especially those with liver disease or alcoholism, diabetes, hemochromatosis and AIDS, the bacterium can cause primary septicemia (blood infection), which can be fatal in severe cases.

The Center for Food Safety reminds the public:

Avoid eating raw or undercooked seafood. Use protective clothing (such as gloves) and cover wounds when handling raw seafood. Wash your hands thoroughly between handling raw and cooked seafood. If you are injured by raw seafood, clean the wound as soon as possible with soap and water. If symptoms of infection appear (such as skin redness, swelling, and pain getting worse), you should seek medical treatment immediately.
