Woman diagnosed with human rabies died this morning.
This morning it was learned that the Regional Health Management (Geresa) of Arequipa announced that the woman who was diagnosed with human rabies has just died after several weeks of fighting for her life.
According to Arequipa’s health manager, in recent days his health has been deteriorating, after the virus strongly attacks his immune system and several vital organs.
The news was confirmed by the authorities of the Honorio Delgado hospital in Arequipa. Let us remember that the woman was attacked by a stray dog and she did not go to a health center to receive the corresponding vaccine. However, after three months she began to feel symptoms typical of this disease, which led to her death.
Through a statement, Geresa Arequipa stated that the patient died around 5:45 a.m. in the intensive care unit of the Honorio Delgado hospital in Arequipa.
Health personnel had already announced that the patient’s health was confidential, since she was in the ICU, had been intubated and connected to an artificial respirator.

Initially, the health status of the 54-year-old woman with human rabies in Arequipa was stable, but on Monday her condition worsened and she was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Honorio Delgado hospital due to respiratory problems.
The victim was bitten by a stray dog in mid-July in the Chiguata district, however, she did not pay attention to the consequences of this event.
The head of the Regional Health Management (Geresa) of Arequipa, Walter Oporte Pérez, informed the media that it is very likely that the woman will not be able to get out of this condition, since the virus had already attacked vital organs.
“The virus travels very slowly in the body until it reaches the central nervous system, which is what has happened with the patient now in the ICU,” he noted for the Andina portal.
In this sense, he mentioned that until last year there had been 49 cases of dogs with rabies, which is a cause for great concern due to the high number that continues to rise throughout Peru.

For this reason and as a way of prevention, Geresa issued a statement in which it called on all people who, in the last nine months, have experienced a bite or injury caused by a dog, whether known or unknown, and who have not received timely medical attention.
According to what the Digesa official commented this morning, a person is being monitored, as he would be presenting some symptoms of this disease. However, even his diagnosis is not confirmed.
The Vice Minister of Public Health of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), Ricardo Peña Sánchez, warned that in Peru, there are approximately 6 million stray dogs, of which 4 million are in Lima. This population of stray dogs represents a significant risk for the spread of new cases of rabies.
“Dogs without owners are an important population that must be taken into consideration and focused on their control. The ‘four legs’ law establishes systematic sterilization to prevent their reproduction and the increase in the canine population on the street,” he commented on RPP.

In addition, he said that the preventive work of the Minsa will not stop there, because the sterilizations will also be accompanied by adoption and responsible ownership activities.
“We are going to ensure that the animals have a home that welcomes them through this initiative. The approach will be comprehensive. Our objective is to end this health problem,” said the official.
