Berlin. Millions of people have died as a result of the coronavirus. In Austria, a woman has now been convicted of negligent homicide.
While the Corona season is just picking up speed in Germany, a court in Klagenfurt, Austria, has made a groundbreaking ruling. Regional Court in Klagenfurt considered it proven that a woman, now 54 years old, infected her neighbor, who was suffering from cancer, with Corona in December 2021 through gross negligence. The man died as a result of the virus. The 54-year-old has now been sentenced to a suspended sentence of four months for grossly negligent homicide. In addition, the woman must pay a fine of 200 daily rates of four euros each, with a total value of 800 euros. The verdict is not yet final.
The neighbor died as a result of a corona infection at a pneumoniaAn expert used genetic analysis to determine that the deceased’s virus and the woman’s virus were “almost 100 percent” identical. Such a high degree of coverage is very rare because coronaviruses change rapidly, the expert explained.
Woman already convicted of intentional endangerment
“I am sorry for you personally – I think something like this has probably happened a hundred times,” the judge said in her Reasons for the judgment to the defendant. “But you are unlucky that an expert has determined with almost absolute certainty that it was an infection that came from you.” That is enough for a guilty verdict, explained the judge.
In July 2023, the woman was already intentional endangerment due to communicable diseases, she was sentenced to a suspended sentence of three months. Despite positive corona tests in December 2021, she had disregarded her mandatory quarantine, left her apartment and talked to people without a mask. The death of the neighbor was now tried in a separate trial.
