A farce of great proportions was exposed in Brazil: A woman pretended to be sick to receive donations. This is Kamilla Morgana Mendes, 29, who was arrested after being reported for the scam.
According to local media, the woman pretended to be suffering from cancer and asked for donations to cover the costs of her supposed treatment, but used the money to finance a life of luxury and cosmetic procedures.
The scam was discovered thanks to a complaint by Gustavo Henrique de Moura, Mendes’ art teacher, who claimed to have been deceived by the woman, to whom he gave more than 50 thousand reais. De Moura said that the woman had assured him that she suffered from breast cancer, which had supposedly spread throughout her body.

According to statements by the police commissioner, Igomar de Souza Caetano, Mendes used social media to post photos from a hospital bed, pretending to be undergoing cancer treatment, in order to raise awareness and obtain donations.
However, the investigation revealed that the funds were diverted to dinners at exclusive restaurants, cosmetic procedures and the rental of a luxury apartment.
“She lived a life of expense and luxury. She used this device to raise awareness and move the victim, who believed she was helping others, in an act of generosity. But, unfortunately, it was all a lie,” Caetano told a Brazilian media outlet.

De Moura, who was one of the main victims, recounted how Mendes pretended to be weak during his drawing classes, even trembling to give more credibility to his lie. The teacher, convinced that he was helping someone in need, went so far as to pay Mendes’ household bills, totaling R$53,000 that he now claims were lost in this scam.
Kamilla Morgana Mendes, following the public exposure of her deception, was arrested and faces charges of embezzlement and fraud.
