Woman and Child Escape Deliberate House Fire in Hollandscheveld

A woman and her child escaped an accident last night when a fire broke out in their semi-detached house. That happened just after midnight at De Boeten in Hollandscheveld, where a fire had broken out. The adjacent house was also damaged. The police suspect that the fire was caused deliberately.

According to a spokesperson for the Drenthe Safety Region, the woman and child were able to be brought to safety by bystanders who came to help. Ultimately, the woman and her child were able to climb out through a window, after which ambulance personnel took care of the two. They were later taken to hospital.

When the fire brigade arrived, there was already a raging fire, which eventually destroyed the house. As a precaution, some surrounding homes were also evacuated.

Further investigation must reveal how the fire was caused. The police believe there was intent and arson. Witnesses saw a person in dark clothing who may have thrown something into the house and then ran away in the direction of a nearby school, the police said. Several witnesses also heard one or more loud bangs.
