The incident happened around 2 a.m. near the viaduct at Elst. The woman is said to have been hit by several cars. Emergency services rushed to the scene, including a trauma helicopter. Help was to no avail, the victim died on the spot from his injuries.

It is unknown how the victim ended up on the highway. The police have launched an investigation on the spot. The criminal investigation department and the traffic accident service, among others, are investigating the circumstances. The highway from Nijmegen to Arnhem was closed to traffic until about 5.30 am. Victim Support has been called in for those involved.
