In the United States, a conflict opposes the protectors of wolves and the farmers. The animal is reintroduced following a referendum in Colorado. However, this worries cattle breeders who see their animals being attacked by these predators.
In this region, the packs of wolves had disappeared since the 1940s. Except that recently, a couple of wolves have been prowling again with their offspring. To defend his herd of cows, Don Gittleson, a breeder in the region, has enlisted some very curious guards: “If you get behind a donkey, it can kick you and target a specific area. So they are quite dexterous and if they catch you with their mouth, they have a good jaw too…“. Valuable overseers since Don lost a cow to a wolf.
Another breeder lost his dog, also killed by a wolf. It is certain that they will go even further: “It’s only a matter of time before they catch a cross-country skier here. It will happen again and it will be a human next time” explique Greg Sykes.
An environmental activist, Darlène Kobobel, cannot hear the arguments of these farmers: “There’s always this misconception that wolves hunt and attack people, it comes from the little red riding hood myths and all those horror stories that make the wolf that big bad wolf.“.
The director of an animal park is convinced that wolves are very useful predators for regulating wildlife. Moreover, for many Americans, they embody wilderness and are part of our heritage.
