Wolverhampton Wanderers unexpectedly said goodbye to coach Julen Lopetegui on Tuesday just before the start of the Premier League season. The club reports that there was a difference of opinion with the Spaniard and that a departure was the best solution.
Six staff members, who came to Wolverhampton together with Lopetegui, are also gone immediately, while the first league game is already scheduled for Monday. ‘The Wolves’ will then visit the Manchester United of trainer Erik ten Hag.
According to Wolverhampton, talks with Lopetegui had been going on for several weeks, giving the club time to begin the search for a successor.
“It also allowed Julen and his staff to continue their planned preparation to ensure that the team can start the Premier League in the best possible way,” the club said. It is not yet clear who will succeed the 56-year-old Spaniard.
The club and Julen Lopetegui have reached an agreement to part ways, ending his nine month stay as head coach.

Lopetegui saved Wolverhampton from relegation
Lopetegui was Wolverhampton’s coach for just nine months. He arrived at Wolverhampton in November, having just been sacked as Sevilla manager.
Wolverhampton occupied last place in the Premier League at the time. Partly thanks to nine victories, the former national coach of Spain and also former coach of Real Madrid guided the club to a safe thirteenth place.
Lopetegui, who was goalkeeper for Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, was on his second foreign adventure as a trainer at Wolverhampton. From 2014 to 2016 he coached FC Porto in Portugal.
