Wolfsburg – The footballers of VfL Wolfsburg have reached the cup final and ended FC Bayern’s impressive winning streak.

Coach Stephan Lerch’s team saved their last chance for the title with a 2-0 (2-0) win on Sunday against the Munich women, who were unbeaten this season. Captain Alexandra Popp, who was injured shortly before the end, brought Wolfsburg into the lead in the 13th minute, Ewa Pajor (45th + 2) made Bayern’s first defeat in the 27th competitive game perfect.

“We are still a top club and I think we showed that today,” said Wolfsburg’s Lena Oberdorf after the game. Bayern coach Jens Scheuer said: “In the end it was a deserved success for Wolfsburg, we have to acknowledge that”. His team wanted to dominate the game, “but we were intimidated by the robustness of the Wolfsburg women”.

In the final, the wolf women, who have won the trophy six times in a row, will face Eintracht Frankfurt on May 30th. The record winner, who started this season as 1. FFC Frankfurt, won 2-1 (0-1) against SC Freiburg on Saturday and is in the final for the 14th time. The Hessians last won the title in the 2013/14 season.

In front of national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, the wolves got into the game better and delivered Bayern early. In the 10th minute, Rebecka Blomqvist failed with a right-footed shot against the crossbar, and only two minutes later Popp took the well-deserved lead after a nice cross from Svenja Huth. Bayern showed themselves for a long time, with the ailing Klara Bühl and Linda Dallmann playing from the start, but not shocked.

The Bundesliga leaders now invested more, acted more courageously and, thanks to the agile Dallmann, had several chances (27/28), but Wolfsburg also scored the second goal. Again Huth played the ball from the right into the middle, Pajor dusted off. With the two-goal lead behind them, the wolfs took it easy after the break, but Bayern were no longer really dangerous.

For Wolfsburg, the trophy is possibly the last title chance of the season. In the league, the series winner is five points behind Bayern, in the Champions League it ended in the quarter-finals against FC Chelsea, which Munich will now face in the semi-finals. The decisive game for the championship will take place on May 9th in Wolfsburg.
