The handball team of VfL Wolfsburg still has to wait for their second win of the season in the 3rd division, but on Saturday the bottom of the table drew attention – with a 25:25 draw at PSV Recklinghausen. This was not to be expected in this form – for several reasons.

Departure at 2:00 p.m., arrival at 2:00 a.m. – this tour cost the Wolfsburg team a lot of energy, including without backcourt player Lena Witzke and who only came with a squad of eleven. Especially since they also toiled away on the record for 60 minutes. Much to the delight of their coach Joschi Martinson: “When we arrived in the full hall and I saw the opposing players, I just thought to myself: My goodness!” Martinson meant the physical robustness of the 16 women from Recklinghausen. It was clear to him: In this regard, his family cannot keep up.

But the VfL held against it with a lot of fight and commitment. “If I look at the pace alone, it was more than third division level,” said the VfL coach. Even if the guests were a bit intimidated in the early stages and made a few mistakes. From their point of view, it was 1: 6 after less than twelve minutes. Martinson pulled out the green card. “I told the girls during the break to have fun and pack a punch. That’s what they did,” the coach said happily. A flawless hat-trick by the strong Anna Fanslau gave Wolfsburg the lead to make it 7-8 (21st). A bit bitter that the opponent was able to build a 13:9 cushion again before the break.
“If the game had gone 20 seconds longer, we would have won,” Martinson was certain. The last attack belonged to his team, but only three seconds proved to be too little for a conclusion by fanslau. Other problem points on the VfL side: Five huge chances missed and numerous time penalties, which left the four of Wolfsburg on the plate several times. Nevertheless, the point was celebrated extensively. Martinson: “The girls really sang the whole way back.”
Next game on Monday against second in the table
With the self-confidence in their backs fueled, the women from Lower Saxony will already be contesting their next encounter on Monday evening (7.30 p.m.). The second in the table, TV Hannover-Badenstedt, is a guest. VfL, to which Witzke may return, will not hide again. “I told the girls to show what they’ve got against any opponent,” Martinson reveals, before adding with equal determination: “They’re right to be second, but we’re definitely not going to give them the two points for free. “
