Wolfsburg surpasses COVID-19 outbreak to beat Stuttgart

Wolfsburg revealed a coronavirus outbreak at the club shortly before facing Stuttgart in the Bundesliga on Sunday, but their incomplete lineup was still able to pull off a 1-0 win.

Wolfsburg reported two hours before kick-off that midfielder Maximilian Arnold and left-back Jerome Roussillon were isolated at home on Saturday after testing positive for COVID-19.

Three other players were quarantined by local authorities because they had close contact with the infected players. Brazilian right-back William had been isolated Tuesday after testing positive.

Wolfsburg passed Borussia Dortmund to fourth in the Bundesliga with a victory over Stuttgart. Josip Brekalo scored the only goal of the duel in the 49th minute with a free kick that was deflected a couple of times by Stuttgart players before ending up between the nets. Stuttgart sit in the seventh spot after suffering their first away loss since returning to the Bundesliga this season.

A dismal defensive performance sank Hertha Berlin in a 4-1 loss in Freiburg, which leaves the team in 14th position in the 18-club league and with just one win in its last six games.

Freiburg opened the scoring with a Vincenzo Grifo header, before Hertha equalized with a Dodi Lukebakio finish after a deflected cross pass and missed a series of chances to score the second.

It was the last day of games before a shortened winter break. Most Bundesliga teams will participate in a round of cup commitments on Tuesday and Wednesday before the league resumes activities on January 2.
