After an hour it looked for VfL Wolfsburg after the first bankruptcy under the new coach Florian Kohfeldt. But then the Lower Saxony saved a 2-2 in Bielefeld.

Bielefeld – Florian Kohfeldt looked relaxed and tidy inside when he analyzed VfL Wolfsburg’s game, which was characterized by light and shadow.

«Morale shows the character of the team. You can work on the content. If it were the other way around, you would have a problem, ”said the soccer teacher after the fourth competitive game with Lower Saxony, who achieved a 2: 2 (0: 1) deficit at Arminia Bielefeld after falling 2: 2.

After a bad 60 minutes, VfL had apparently been significantly behind due to the Bielefeld goals from Masaya Okugawa (11th minute) and Fabian Klos (54th). But the goal scorer Wout Weghorst (62nd) and Lukas Nmecha (63rd) saved the afternoon for Wolfsburg, which had won the first three competitive games under Kohfeldt, within a minute.

Wolfsburg before the next CL game – Bielefeld proud

Wolfsburg remains with 20 points striking distance to the Champions League places and can go to the group game on Tuesday at Sevilla FC with a good feeling. The last impression was also in the foreground at Weghorst. “We have taken a good path,” said the Dutch international with a view to the short span after the separation from Mark van Bommel and the assumption of office by Kohfeldt. “The feeling is good, the coach is an important key.” The trip to Seville is followed by the home game against Bayern-Munich rivals Borussia Dortmund.

That also seems to be the case in Bielefeld, the pride in the performance shown was greater than the disappointment about the missed second win of the season. “The boys are hardworking and present, sometimes looking for playful solutions, are gallant and greedy,” said coach Frank Kramer, who is now facing the top game at Bayern with his team.

In front of 19,801 spectators on the Alm, the guests set the first accent when national player Lukas Nmecha could only be slowed down by a foul by Amos Pieper (2nd). Nmecha would have come in a promising position, referee Martin Petersen (Stuttgart) showed Pieper yellow. Then Bielefeld took command and embarrassed Wolfsburg early on. Kevin Wimmer, who played with a mask because of his facial injury, lifted the ball into the penalty area after a solo on Okugawa, who volleyed the ball into the far corner to take the lead. The Wolfsburg did not recover from the shock for a long time.

Bielefeld’s Ortega again and again with parades

Both coaches had to change early due to injuries: At Bielefeld things went just as little for Wimmer as at VfL for Paulo Ottavio. Edmilson and Jerome Roussillion came into play.

Kohlfeldt brought in Maximilian Philipp for Renato Steffen at the beginning of the second round. The body language of the guests was immediately different. Lukas Nmecha then had a great opportunity to equalize. His shot missed the target (48th). After a foul in the penalty area by Kevin Mbabu on Schöpf, referee Petersen pointed to the point – striker Klos made sure to score.

Only then did the Lower Saxony respond. Substitute for Mbabu, Dodi Lukebakio prevailed on the right side and played on the far post, where Weghorst only had to insert. Seconds after the restart, the striker prepared for Nmecha, who was successful with a shot in the corner. In the end, goalkeeper Stefan Ortega became the savior of Arminia with parades against Maximilian Arnold and Sebastiaan Bornauw.
