Wolfsburg – The green and white football miracle didn’t happen: The women of VfL Wolfsburg missed out on a surprise win and were eliminated from the Champions League.
A 2-0 (0-0) win against defending champions FC Barcelona in the second leg of the semifinals was not enough to qualify for the final. Despite an improved performance by VfL compared to the disastrous 1:5 in the first leg, the Spanish defending champions deservedly made it into the final in Turin.
In front of a record crowd of 22,057 spectators, Wolfsburg started scoring too late. Tabea Waßmuth scored the opening goal shortly after the start of the second half (47th minute) with a shot from almost 18 meters. Jill Roord increased from a similar position to make it 2-0 (59th). VfL should have won by four goals to go into extra time.
The Lower Saxons showed a good performance at the beginning, but made a lot of mistakes in the first half, which the Spanish favorites should have exploited. Barcelona kept coming up with dangerous actions. In the second half, the Wolfsburg women determined the game. Especially towards the end of the game, VfL coach Tommy Stroot’s team had good chances to score.
